Currently teaching Swimming for Nonswimmers (kin 177) , Swimming 1 (kin 178) and Swimming for Conditioning (kin 179) and Movement Forms: Sport, Dance, & Exercise (kin 201/201L).
Teach Swimming for Non Swimmers in a group setting. This involves helping them get over fear of the water, and teaching basics such as floating and breathing skills. As the semester goes on, students learn to swim freestyle, elementary backstroke and backstroke as well as how to tread water. They learn to use swim equipment such as kick boards and pull buoys. Toward the end of the semester, they are encouraged to go into the deeper water and work on the same skills in a more advanced setting.
Swimming 1 focuses on reviewing strokes students already know and teaching those which they don't (usually breaststroke and butterfly). Class time is divided into reviewing/teaching the stroke and conducting workouts involving those strokes. Students learn swim drills, use of pool equipment and about intervals for improving their skills. They are also taught how to write their own swim workout.
Swimming for conditioning is geared toward former swim team members. A small part of each class is used to review the competitive strokes. The rest of the class is completing a challenging workout. Students who are not former swimmers are "brought up to speed" as quickly as possible. Swimmers are divided into groups according to speed and ability. All students complete approximately the same workout but some swim less distance and/or swim slower intervals. All students receive a challenging workout each class period.
In Movement Forms, I teach the "sports" section and the sports section lab. In this class, students take turns presenting on such topics as team or individual sport rules, movement patterns of that sport, common injuries of that sport and ways to prevent these injuries. All student presenting on the same sport then lead the rest of the class in participating in that sport. Students lead other students through warm up, drills and then the actual sport. My role is as a teacher who corrects any errors they make during their presentations and then, during the sport, making sure they are organized, the warmup is correct for that particular sport and also that the class is run in an organized fashion.
Swim Coach, Level Two (May 2007 - current)
Conejo Simi Swim Club, Simi Valley, CA, United States
I coach for a swim team of 250 competitors.
I coach at the intermediate group level. At this level, swimmers range from age 8 to age 15, depending on their abilities and how long they have been swimming.
Our swim team is a highly competitive team and everything taught is geared toward competition. Therefore, swimmers are taught diving, competitive starts, competitive turns, flip turns, backstroke flip turns and, of course, speed and technique. The vast majority of the time is spent perfecting their strokes so that they are both efficient and fast.
Our swim team is ranked Silver level by USA Swimming and we are in the top 150 swim teams in the United States.
